It was great to see BBC Springwatch using drone technology this evening. The aim was to seek out Hares in the open countryside. These animals are very difficult to spot from the ground and also from the air using electro-optical sensors. Instead, the team used Infrared technology. The result was a lighthearted attempt but a Hare was found.
I spent a number of years using airborne Infrared technology. The key to success is in the interpretation of the images, it is very different to normal photographic images. Notwithstanding warm bodies, what can be found, for example, is previously upturned earth because the moisture content at different levels varies over many years. This can be useful for archaeological studies and potentially police and security work.
